We Are Closed But Still On Track...
But the museum train is behind schedule…
Milam County officials are moving the renovation of the old Cameron Hospital conversion along as best they can. The Hospital is being converted to a new Milam County Annex for all the county offices that have taken up valuable downtown retail space on the Courthouse square.
Covid, material shortages and delivery delays have thwarted contractors from moving along on the renovation at the pace they had hoped. There is however good news! The contractors are now 90% complete and are waiting on an electrical breaker panel. That should arrive soon. When the panel is installed, carpeting and other flooring can be laid and move in can begin.
We are waiting for the building next door to the Milam County Historical Museum to be vacated. It now houses the Juvenile Probation Department. They have been slated as one of the first offices to move into the new annex. When they are moved, we will then begin demolition of the interior of that building and renovate it for our use.
We have been working since we received word that all these moves were going to take place to design our new space. In the past few months, we have moved all our museum displays and dismantled the Old Town Cameron model. We have been cleaning, restoring, and relighting the hundreds of buildings on the HO train layout. We have spent many hours creating ways to improve and expand our mission to provide an accurate and entertaining venue that depicts Milam County railroad history.
The timeline we have been given to date is that the moving portion of the county offices should begin in about sixty days (the first of June). We hope to be open by September.
Stay tuned here. We will provide progress updates and pictures of our progress.
Below are some photos of our current progress.
