Welcome to our Milam County Railroad Museum and Old Town Cameron website. Our volunteers and the Milam County Model Railroad Club work hard to provide an environment for young and old to learn and explore Milam County’s rich railroad history. Of course, John Johnson’s creation of Old Town Cameron is an experience on it’s own. We enjoy listening to stories from our local residents that grew up in Cameron in the 1940’s and learning about their lives here. Guests from out of town are amazed at the scale and detail Mr. Johnson has put into his creation. Club members have enjoyed maintaining it and even adding even more detail to the layout. It comes complete with operating model trains...Just ask and we will let you operate a train!
We hope you enjoy our museum and share your experience with your friends.

ABOUT THE MILAM COUNTY RAILROAD MUSEUM...
HOME OF OLD TOWN CAMERON
The Milam County Railroad Museum is owned by Milam County and is dedicated to portraying the history of railroads in Milam County. In addition, it is home to the Old Town Cameron exhibit. The museum is volunteer operated and funded with a small stipend from Milam County, grants, and donations. While the museum is not part of the Milam County Museum, or the Milam County Jail Museum, it is part of a system of museums and displays that is coordinated by the curator of the Milam County Museum. The museum has one paid staff member (part time) and relies on area citizens to volunteer their time to help keep this Milam County treasure open.
Old Town Cameron is a model of how Cameron, Texas appeared in the 1940's. It is a glimpse back in time and is a remarkable recreation of the town along with an operating model railroad layout.
This model is the work of one man, John Johnson and his wife Frances. John fell in love with his hometown at an early age. As a young adult, he moved to Austin, Texas where he formed the idea of making a model of Cameron as he had known it. He found support at a hobby shop and he began creating a miniature replica of downtown Cameron. Out of that beginning came the 18' by 40' treasure we now have and which we lovingly call, Old Town Cameron. It took John 35 years to create and build this magnificent model - and was still adding to it the week before he passed away!
The museum contains not only the model of Cameron, but the model railroad layout that is part of the model, other Milam County railroad history displays and artifacts from times gone by. Exhibits change from time to time, so plan on visiting several times a year to see it all!
The museum is located at 110 West First Street, downtown Cameron, Texas.
Volunteer Driven...
Volunteers maintain and operate this museum. We have one part time paid staff, so we need volunteers to keep this museum open and operational. If you would like to join us in our effort to preserve and improve the Old Town Cameron and/or the associated area railroad exhibits, please let us know and we will gladly put you to work!
